ICC welcomes Palestine
It has been a long time coming. A long time that Palestine was acknowledged and its people recognised. And no better place to begin that the ICC. This April 1st 2015, The ICC welcomed Palestine as the 123rd state to its founding Rome statute.
Assecion to the treaty is of course the first step.
“Such highly symbolic commitment confirms, once again, that people all over the world embrace the noble ideals of the ICC, that are ideals of peace and justice for all,” said Mr. Kaba.
Dr Riad Al-Malki, the minister of foreign affairs of Palestine, said, the accession brought the world closer to its shared goals of justice and peace. Which is exactly what the Palestinians are owed and justifiably so.
“As Palestine formally becomes a State Party to the Rome Statute today, the world is also a step closer to ending a long era of impunity and injustice,” he said.
This will begin to call into action all the injustices done to Palestinians, especially the bombardment of Gaza last summer which killed more people than since the occupation began in 1945.
This all comes a step closer as investigations were underway in the beginning of this year in January by Fatou Bensouda, the ICC prosecutor about the activity that has been happening in the occupied Palestinian territory.
This a good news for all, apart from Israel i should imagine. May their war crimes come to light more than before and this time with the legitimacy of the ICC.
