Palestinian food truck - first of its kind
In the West bank things are difficult, but nothing is stopping two men from living their dream to open and run a food truck serving delicious food. The first of its kind in Palestine which opened in Ramallah in a fruit and vegetable market.
The food truck is the brain child of Khaldoun Barghouti and Abdel Rahman Bibi. These two men were political prisoners and served a total of 9 years, and during this time they discussed amongst themselves how they would survive upon leaving. They didnt want to depend on other people for help and getting back on their feet was so important, so this was the best option. They new they would attract attention, and thought people would come once or twice as it was a novelty, but their clients came back again and again for more, to support them and because the food was so good!
Having been in prison for quite some time, these two men knew that they didnt want to be in a stationary place, they wanted movement and freedom, so what better way then to create a moving restaurant. Its actually quite genius if you think about it.
They served simple food such as Falafel, shawerma, breaded chicken and fries with lots of pickles and toppings and really made a success of it. Not only that, they thought about being environmentally friendly by getting solar panels attached to the roof of their truck to create reusable energy that would help keep the generator on for the fridge, freezer and fans to keep them cool in the hot sun of Palestine.
The smart thing about this truck is that it moves, and they follow the crowd. They park infront of Al-Quds university, outside the city centre where people are coming out for lunch breaks and then by the markets in the late afternoon before people go home, so they are really actively moving around with the crowd attracting as much as they can.
They gained such a fantastic reputation, that another food truck is wanting to operate in Gaza and has even asked them for help in getting everything organised, which they gladly said they would. They have achieved great success and are now looking for some more people to help them with this new business as it is flourishing.
What a great way to roll out a new idea in Palestine. I am sure the food is as good as they say.
